Get the Most Out of Your Next Sauna Experience

Hi, I’m Taylor, a local Functional Nutritionist and avid Salt Spot lover. I specialize in helping purpose-driven women uncover the root cause of their symptoms so they can thrive in their bodies again. I achieve this through sustainable diet and lifestyle changes, therapeutic supplements and functional lab testing.

Detoxification and drainage are two big things I work with each of my clients on, and saunas and salt rooms are so helpful for both. They are incredible for supporting detoxification, reducing inflammation, and promoting relaxation - things we all need in our fast-paced lives.  How great is it having this incredible business so close to home?

Here are some tips on how to get the most out of your next sauna experience:

  • Hydrate: Make sure to drink plenty of water, especially adding in electrolytes to replenish what is lost when you sweat. You can do this by adding a small pinch of high quality sea salt to your water or a splash of lemon. You can also sip on herbal teas, like stinging nettle, hibiscus or chamomile. Coconut water is also a great option, just make sure it’s a brand with no added sugars.

  • Mindful breathing: One way we detoxify is through our breath, so taking deep belly breaths during sauna use is helpful to further assist your body in detoxing. It also increases mental clarity, further reduces stress and enhances oxygenation in our body at a time when our blood flow is increased. Hello, increased vitality! To do this, the 4-7-8 breathing technique is great. Take a deep breath through your nose for 4 counts, ensuring your belly is expanding. Hold your breath for 7 counts, then exhale through your mouth for 8 counts and repeat.

  • Cold shower: When we sweat, toxins are released. If we don’t take a cold shower right away to close our pores, the toxins can be reabsorbed. If you’re like me and have a bit of a drive home, the cold towels provided are the next best thing! They’re great to use as soon as you get out to cool down, but to also get those toxins wiped away and pores closed up.

  • Supportive foods: Afterwards it’s helpful to eat hydrating foods that replenish your body and support detoxification. A few great foods to incorporate are: berries, citrus fruits, animal protein, dark leafy greens, ginger, beets, and avocado.

This month, try incorporating a few new detox-friendly habits into your routine. Small, consistent changes are the most sustainable over time. Curious about how to tailor detox and drainage strategies to your unique needs? Whether it’s optimizing your nutrition, exploring sauna benefits, or diving deeper with lab testing, I’d love to support you on your wellness journey.
